According to the Geology website, the pink color of rose quartz can be attributed to microscopic inclusions of a pink variety of the mineral Dumortierite. These inclusions are usually abundant enough to make the rose quartz translucent instead of transparent.

Because the Rose Quartz carries with it the vibrations of Universal Love, it is known to support the heart chakra. It nurtures self-love and assists in self-forgiveness and acceptance. This gentle stone, however, offers you the highest form of inner peace, kindness, and happiness. Rose Quartz wants nothing more than to comfort and bring joy, so place anywhere you need a lot of TLC.

Once you receive the Rose Quartz that is calling to you, I believe that if you are using it for personal use, it only needs cleansing upon arrival. That being said, please feel free to cleanse your crystals as often as you think it is required. Certainly, purify crystals if you are using it to do any form of healing work.

For the Rose Quartz, I recommend running under distilled water, smudging, leaving out overnight in the moonlight, or simply ringing a bell or clapping over the piece. These really are some of the safest ways to clear any crystal as sea salt, sun, harsh water, or other means could damage the color or less stable substances.
